Q&A 77

Q. It is so obvious that humans need God, but does God need us? Please, what are your views?
A. Strictly speaking God does not need us. He does not need anything. He is perfect. He lacks nothing. Nothing He creates can increase or improve His happiness, blessedness, glory, power, mercy, love, justice, beauty, wisdom, etc. If they could then He wasn't perfect in the first place and therefore wasn't God - because God by definition is perfect.

Q. But...

A. But God has WANTED TO NEED us much like the father of a 6 year old boy strictly speaking doesn't need his son's help to wash the car, but can still want and ask for it.

Why would God want to need us or the father of the 6 year old want to need the help of his son?

Because of what we or the 6 year old stand to gain.

By washing the car with his son, the father quite frankly wastes more water, soap and time than if he did it alone. But with his son, his son learns how to wash the car and to wash it without wasting so much water, soap or time. The boy improves. He becomes more like his father.

Similarly, God has wanted to ask our help in procreating new humans, in completing the work of creation, in feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless, in teaching and raising babies to be human, etc. He could do these and many more things on His own with much less trouble but has instead wanted to need our help in them. Why? Because of what WE stand to gain: we learn to grow in the same virtuous and perfections God has. We become more like our Father God.

So, no God does not need us but has wanted to need us - for our benefit.

Pray for the unity of Christians!
