Intro
Let’s go back to Part 10 and its annex. They can be summarized by saying two things:
- To be really good at anything, you need spend a helluva lot of time practicing, studying, discovering its secrets…
- You make time for all this practice principally through order in your mind (a game plan of sorts) and order in your day (a timetable of sorts). But you make time, you’ll never “find” it.
Short Exercise 12
- In Part 10, you were asked to study the annex. If you only read it, go back and study it now.
- As you study it, pay keen attention to:
a. What the 10,000hr rule states.
b. The distinction between becoming extremely good at something, a master at it, or the world’s best in it.
c. The distinction between talent and skill.
d. The 10,000hrs have to be hours of deliberate practice.
e. If you’re not aiming for something great, you’re wasting your time! If you spend 10,000hrs on something mediocre, or average, you need help. Even 2hrs on something mediocre or average should bother you. So, again: if you’re not aiming for something great, you’re wasting your time – and the world’s (if we’re to be blunt about it, because your greatness in your chosen field is precisely how you will be useful to the world).
Commentary
Let’s get real… Let’s get serious: manliness and its pursuit are not a part-time job, a side-hustle, a pastime… Something you do when life is good or “normal”, when there is no lockdown or when the wifi is down… Manliness is also not something easy. It’s not meant to be!
But it is worthwhile.
Absolutely!
